Hundreds of Sikh school-children proudly wearing turbans will hold a march up to the French embassy in India on Monday, a day after President Jacques Chirac's arrives in India, in protest against his country's ban on conspicuous religious symbols, including the Sikh headdress, at state schools.

"Sikhs in France are pigeonholed into a category they do not fit in," Sikh religious leader Manjit Singh told a news conference here as he announced plans for the march against France's secularity law during Chirac's visit.

Singh, a senior member of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee and president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Panthak), said the event aimed at drawing the French President's attention to the impasse in France over turbans, which he described as central to Sikh identity.

The protest march will be peaceful. “Our intention is to tell the French President that our identity is linked to the turban and it should not be taken away from us,” he added.

"France should accommodate the tapestry of diversity within its very rich culture. The ban on religious symbols in French schools shows that the West is trying to define who we are and expects us to live by its dictation. The march we will hold on Monday will thus not just challenge a law but the western way of thinking," he said.

Paris and its suburbs are home to the bulk of France’s Sikh population, estimated at 6,000. An estimated 300 Sikh boys attend French state schools, many of whom have now been expelled as result of this law.

What exactly will they be able to accomplish? If protests in France itself could accomplish nothing, if protests here in the U.S. couldn't accomplish anything, if protests anywhere accomplished nothing at all, what will the march in India do?

Well, we may not get the French to change their silly law, but at least the world will know that we haven't given up, haven't backed down, and are not about to forget.

God bless

"When all other means have failed, It is then righteous to take the sword in the hand."

I wonder how many more different 'peaceful' types of means France wants us to take up before, we put the words of Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj into action.

Are they any peaceful means left?

Haanji, Singh Jeeo - there are still peaceful means left. As long as we are willing to devote our mind, body, and soul to the cause of the Sikhs, and the cause of justice through these means, they exist for us. As long as we are willing to struggle and sacrifice to come up with new peaceful means to ensure we get what we deserve, even if not as Sikhs but as humans, these means will remain. But as soon as we give up and turn to the sword, all is lost, and the very humanity we will have fought to preserve will have been destroyed.

There is always another way - no matter what.

Always another way?

Are you sure? Perhaps you could list a few more things that we could try which haven't be done so far.

Peaceful means work, when the people you are dealing with have some humanity in them. I don't think the french government have this within them. If they did, they would never have brought such a law in, which is a breach of one of the fundamental human rights.

But I wont write anymore, lets just hope and pray guru sahib does his amazing on his sons and daughters across the world.
